This is pretty amazing– in his series titled “Broken Flowers,” photographer John Shireman takes perfect floral specimens, shatters them into millions of pieces, and photographs the before and after. This effect requires soaking the flowers in a liquid nitrogen bath beforehand, and the final photo of the smashed petals is mesmerizing– the florals break into sharp fragments with crisp edges, as if made from finely blown sheets of glass.
The series appears to have been last updated in 2010– I want to see more! Dahlias and peonies would make a fantastic shattered effect, I think. [Via This Is Colossal.]
