These photos of light trails are more than man-made light painting photographs– these are slow-shutter and multi-exposure composite photos of fireflies floating about in their nightly mating ritual dances. Photographer Tsuneaki Hiramatsu has been taking these photos in the Maniwa and Okayama Prefecture in Japan during the summer rainy season, where the fireflies come out to mate after thunderstorms have passed through the region.

These would make for dreamy desktop backgrounds– the natural fluorescent glow of the fireflies seems simultaneously erratic yet purposeful, and its an unexpected depiction of a familiar summer evening.

Alas, Hiramatsu’s website seems to be down, so all the info and photos are sourced via My Modern Met.
